La Mirada Head coach Mike Moschetti stepped down Tuesday after nine seasons. “It was just the right time. La Mirada needs another leader. It will be good for the school and good for me,” Moschetti said.
In his nine seasons, including his first two sharing HC duties with Ollie Lynch, Moschetti compiled a 79-34 record and a pair of CIF titles. Last year Moschetti led the Matadores to not only a CIF Southeast Division title with a win over La Serna but the State championship as well with a victory over Campolindo (Moraga).
This past season La Mirada went 11-3 overall but fell in the CIF Division 3 Championship game to Edison 44-24.
“I just feel at times we were getting complacent this year. I love the kids, love the school, but kids get tired of hearing the same old tired things I say and do. This will be a spark to take this program to the next level. I’m so grateful for everything the school has done for me – the teachers, the administration, they have been incredible and we wouldn’t be where we are today without my former coach and AD Kim Brooks,” Moschetti added.
Moschetti will still be on campus and helping with college recruiting. La Mirada now begins the search for a replacement.
too much awesomeness!!
Topic Moschetti=could it be that the current players do not remember the 3rd place teams back in 05, 06, and 07 + and they may not show the ‘earned respect’ for Moschetti like some previous teams with his staff. When he took over and won big fairly instantly; taking back the league from Mayfair; then winning CIF in year 2 or 3; the players realized that the new coaching staff had a ‘huge effect’ on LM’s improvement. But sometimes, a few years later, the players do not realize what Moschetti’s staff did for the program and players may think “we can win with any coach”. ????????I do not claim I am near correct, just a suggestion. I have seen it happen before
Anonymous: LM deserves 10 or more transfers a year; similar to La Habra when the new staff took over a poor program (although La Mirada was never poor; always had good athletes and that is why they may still have the longest CIF Playoff entry streak in California), and turned the program into a huge winner. The coaching staff at La Habra earned the right to get many best players in the area that wanted to win big. Same for Moschetti and his staff.
What’s going on with Kim Brooks these days? Moschetti said in his parting statement that he feels well disposed toward this man, but last we heard, Kim was adressing his baseball team in a rather spirited postgame rant, one that got national attention. If Mike is saying that Brooks has changed for the better and that’s why he likes this fellow, it would make a tremendously uplifting story to tell during this Christmas season.
As Legend said in another thread only posters that have never accomplished anything in their lives throw rocks at clearly successful young people. Medrano and Dr. Kwek have accomplished more in one day probably than Don Juan has his entire existence. If I am wrong Donny boy please inform us of your abilities of any note. Maybe a telephone scammer, dog walker or a late nite Uber driver? BTW Dr. Kwek is not at La Mirada!! That alone proves you are just lying to get yourself some attention.
Elliot a great basketball coach? I stopped reading there.
Medrano ain’t going anywhere. He left to coach in his hometown. He has built a great staff. Both he and his staff are class acts. He is well respected and loved by all. The guy took less to be in a great environment. That is the reality if you coach in California. You really don’t get paid for coaching so you need to like your 6 hour teaching job in order to love the coaching job your really don’t get paid for. Medrano might retire at the Ranch. Maybe be a principal there in 10 years.
Love you brother.
@Don Juan,
Your a hater! You must have been someone who applied for the coaching job and didn’t get it. Or your one of the guys from the Hiatt/Lopez staff that would sit in the stand at games and talk ish. Give me a name of one of the applicants that was note qualified than Medrano. Maybe then you have an argument but we got the best guy for the job.
Elrancho do you work in the Human Resources department at either ERUSD or NLMUSD? Principals hire and fire at the high school level. Athletic Directors have zero power to make those types of decisions. Even as great as a basketball coach Ray Elliot was, he doesn’t have that sorta power. Kwek hired Medrano 120 percent without a doubt! Now she may not have the power to put him in the job at LM but you better believe she can walk her 5 foot nothing behind into that Principals office and provide a recommendation for her favorite coach!
La Mirada gets 10 Transfers a year . They are the kids that don’t play at St. John Bosco and Long beach poly.
What is the point about making up lies and stating untrue facts and trying to pass it off as the truth. Have you no dignity or character? I guess it is a sign of the times and a strong indication of what our political election created. Fake news is good, especially if it hurts someone.
Football Fan, I’m sure glad you were able to clear that up. You seem to be an insider, someone in the know. As an insider, I am sure you are privileged to the halftime speeches and non-post game talks. There was some concern from our homegrown La Mirada community, and would not like our program to be cast in such a bad light. Coach Moschetti has done some amazing things with our homegrown kids, considering the lack of appropriate facilities…Pride and Rings!
First of all Kwek wasn’t the one who hired Medrano she has absolutely no say in the hiring I can assure you of that. 2nd of all if you knew Medrano he was only going to leave a situation like Bonita for his Alma Mater El Rancho high school, things went better than expected in terms of commitment from the players, admin, alumni and parental support. He has it good at ER and didn’t come because of money or romance, he’s dam well not leaving ER for La Mirada, if by some crazy chance he did leave you could forget about any recruiting out of city kids.
I am the father of a player of la Mirada and IM truly
Saddened by his resignation. He developed my son and helped him get multiple scholarship offers. I know he care for his kids and has extreme loyalty to his kids. i can say it takes a lot of energy to coach this new generation of players…….good luck on his endeavors…
Wow, you (Anon) are really trying to stir it up.
Yes, he talked to the kids at halftime and no, it wasn’t what you are alluding to.
Keep it up, we know which school you are from and pretty much have figured out who you are.
I have been expanding my Roku channels with stuff most can’t see but me. As I was flipping through Pac 12 Mountain at 2am, QB Mike Moshetti of Colorado (coached by Rick Neuhisel) was carving up Oregon in 98 Aloha Bowl that had Akili Smith and Herman Ho-Ching, a dominant RB out of LB Poly. Moshetti passed for 4 TDs. Oregon gave up 6 turnovers. CO won 51-43
Medrano’s girlfriend hired him at ER before she left for Norwalk La Mirada District Office. Medrano has already turned in his application and his letters of recommendation which one of them written by… well you can probably guess.
Heard a rumor that may be true or may be not, that Medrano’s girlfriend is a higher up at la Mirada school district and that he may go there. Like I said, just something I heard.
Any word if the halftime speech that was given (from my understanding, made the LM ex-baseball coach’s recorded rant, in ’14, seem like a Luciano Pavarotti rendition of Ave Maria) have anything to do with it? Like he said, “…kids get tired of hearing the same old tired things I say and do…” Unless, he doesn’t address them during halftime too…
I heard He is going to Bosco tech in Rosemead.
“I just feel at times we were getting complacent this year. I love the kids, love the school, but kids get tired of hearing the same old tired things I say and do. This will be a spark to take this program to the next level.” Next level?! They’ve been to the next level, just last year. How do kids get tired of hearing the same old thing when they are winning? There is more to this than what he is saying. Maybe he moves on to Bishop, after that coach moves on to JSerra. Best of luck to all involved.
Coach Moschetti has never addressed the players on the field after a game. If it is an away game he does it in the locker room or if there is no locker room, at the school. After home games he addresses the team in the locker room.
Looks like another hater trying to stir stuff up.
Here goes my second article for Mid Valley Sports ….. Whew ok breathe.. LOL 12/15/16 Top Ten List #1 This is a joke! Moschetti doesn’t even address or talk to his players after the games on the field. You’re making stuff up. MVS post and staff writer and maybe new co-worker now T. Peterson.. Yes I did it article #2
Singiser ain’t going anywhere!!!! This season was his best coaching job. The players lost could’ve been disastrous but we rallied and that’s a direct reflection of his leadership. He had to guide a Sophomore Qb and sure it didn’t hurt to have Yezdan Marquez (should be team MVP) but nonetheless Singiser did an awesome job
Word has it He is going to Edison
Any truth to Ledesma out at San Gabriel?
Any word why less than half his team stuck around to listen to him give his post game talk to players, after the loss? Looked to me to be a sign of disrespect when I saw it happening after the game…
From T. Peterson: This is a joke! Moschetti doesn’t even address or talk to his players after the games on the field. You’re making stuff up.
Singheiser, Maggiore and Farrar coming next.
JSerra might be offering Mike something he can’t refuse!
Did he get caught recruiting?? It finally hit the fan!!
Wow!!
