@Oiler nation …..dont matter who I am …. My kid has his League Champ shirts but has the ring to back it up… Poor Tapia just league champ no ring…i don’t know if Montebello plays for a cif ring every year or just A league Champs T shirt !!!!!
@ Be Grate: I hope you’re doing great! Those of us who are actually in the AHS football program have nothing but respect for Bell Gardens. It is always a battle when we play the Lancers.
Our victory at B.G. last season was our first one down there since 1994, when Alhambra coach Gil Ruedaflores had a 9-2 team. And, both of those wins came in close games.
We don’t take anything for granted when we play against Bell Gardens.
Hey, Anonymous (whoever you are), how’s it going? I hope you’re having a good day.
You make an interesting point. Coach Bergstrom has had to make a big adjustment from directing one of the best NCAA Division III offenses at Occidental College to working with high school kids.
Bergstrom has simplified the offense for his players before, and he did it as recently as last season, when we often went with the jumbo set. There will be a lot of soul-searching and work going into our league opener at Montebello on Oct. 6.
I can honestly say that whenever we fall short at AHS, it is rarely because of a lack of effort. We’ll keep trying to find ways to win.
@me,
You sound like a stupid idiot. Being league Champs is part of the process. Why wouldn’t that be important? You’re too stupid to know I’m sure. Who do you represent? Tell me who you are so I can look you up. You act like you speak from experience. Your probably just another clown who likes hating… get a grip dumb ass..
@?
They feel fine because they’ll be at a 4 yr college while your public school kid is bagging groceries are asking if you want to super size your meal.
bassett it ngoing playoffs, hear it here first
Wow league who cares Montebello wins league cool good for them. But come November…they still have to get by Valley View I don’t see it happening. No CIF ring just a league champs shirt ……but we will see…
The Alhambra football program is very similar to the U.S. economy: it has its share of vocal supporters, who urge patience and respect for those currently in charge, but everyone knows deep in their gut that the thing is failing. Vrooman and others here are the cheerleaders for the status quo, guys who say they want improvement, but whose dogged support of mediocrity is unmistakable. They are company men, or parents with vested interests in seeing their sons get playing time.
Those who see things for what they are will tell you straight-faced that Eric Bergstrom has had more than enough time to show some competence, and that his time is up. We will point to the improvement Margarito Beltran has made over the course of ONE YEAR over at BG and tell you that Bergstrom hasn’t come close to that level of progress in ALL the years he has guided AHS. We say this not because we have a personal motive in the matter, but simply because the KIDS deserve better.
Haha By default @Alhambra football you still have to play the game. Alhambra just got by us last year and BG basically had a JV team out there. Plus our coaching is leaps and bounds above your staff you have to take that into consideration. Lol by default you crack me up
hah and some of muir’s football players came over to our school on their bye week to bully us in the stands and taunt us on how we were “gonna lose” this past week
I wonder how it feels if you are a transfer or long commuter or a recruited player playing at La Mirada, Buena Park, Amat, Santa Fe, St Paul,La Serna etc. Stay home boys. Get accolades the old fashioned way. Earn it.
@ Alhambra football: You made some valid points in your last post. We went with our jumbo offensive set in the later stages of the 2016 season for that very reason, in addition to the fact that we couldn’t pass effectively.
I wouldn’t be so dismissive about Bell Gardens. We’ll have to play well to beat the Lancers, but we’re capable of doing that.
@ Gut Check: No, we haven’t hit rock bottom. That happened in 2013, when Alhambra went 2-8, beating only Keppel and San Gabriel.
We won five games last year and made the playoffs. And, three of our losses in 2016 were by three points apiece. We had a competitive team.
Do we need to step it up? Absolutely, and the coaching staff and the players will be working hard the rest of the season to make it back to the playoffs.
We share your concern about our line play, but it’s ridiculous to propose a midseason coaching change. Such an abrupt change would create more turmoil in a program that has experienced far too much already.
It’s not going to happen.
Am not trying to fire Eric,am saying that maybe he needs to change things inside the program because what he is doing right now is not working. Maybe he needs simplify the scheme. And let the players play instead of them thinking on the field.
As far as making playoffs it’s not like Alhambra has competition for the third league spot. Schurr and montebello mostly likely will be the top 2 teams.
Then for the third spot in league you have keppel, San Gabriel who are struggling and rebuilding. That leaves bg who is also rebuilding so by default Alhambra gets the third spot. There’s not much competition in the almont maybe in a few years there will be.
When you’ve got to worry about beating this year’s edition of Oiler football, you know you’ve hit rock-bottom. The problem for Alhambra versus the Oilers is that Montebello is going to win the battle at the line of scrimmage. If the Moors made a quick coaching change, that might provide the spark and energy to boost their line’s performance. If not, I don’t see much chance for Bergstrom’s team to make the postseason.
A clarification: The post by Mr. Objective that I was responding to was the one that appeared at 9:21 p.m.. I want to set that straight before someone starts in with any more smart-aleck remarks.
I didn’t see Mr. Objective’s additional comments, which were in response to “Forever Moor,” until after I’d made my post.
I totally agree with Mr. Objective’s point about the importance of character in our coaches. (And, for that matter, in our teachers, school administrators, and staff members as well.)
@Rams Fan, thank you for finally admitting good coaching does matter regardless of the demographics. At least that’s what I think you meant. In regards to my picks, I don’t pick the obvious winners. If that was the case, it would be too easy and my record would probably be closer to 90%. I try to pick games where an upset could occur as witnessed by this week’s picks, Marshall and Warren. So one game over .500, I’ll take it.
To whoever’s interested, none of us have ever been OK with losing.
The Alhambra coaching staff is working on the issues that I’ve already discussed on this thread, and they’ll do everything they can to prepare the team for what I believe is a winnable Montebello game.
It appears that we now have our best quarterback since we had Joshua Mendoza back in 2011, and we’ve got a talented group of receivers. We’ll be in business if we can also run-block and play defense against Montebello.
@ Mr. Objective: Very well said.
Coach Bergstrom possesses all of those qualities, and, when it comes to the X’s and O’s, he is one of his own worst critics. He and his staff assess what went right—or wrong—on a weekly basis, and they try to make the necessary adjustments.
But, as I said earlier, the athletes are the ones who have to execute the plays. There is responsibility on both ends.
@ Alhambra Moor: Milvon James? You have got to be kidding, after the academic violations under his watch which caused Augustus Hawkins High School to forfeit multiple games. You’re going to have to come up with a far better plan than that.
@ Forever Moor & Alhambra football: League hasn’t even started, and you’re already talking about removing the same head coach who led Alhambra to its first playoff berth in five years just last season. In addition, we’re now 2-2; it’s not like we’re 1-3 or 0-4.
It would be interesting to see how you’d react if we make the playoffs for a second straight year. It could happen, and if it does, would that be good enough?
My guess is, probably not.
My apologies to Forever Moor. I didn’t realize that the powerhouse Alhambra Football community was growing so anxiously impatient to return to their CIF and league championship ways. I imagine that in your world, creatine vendors, pedophiles, and peeping Toms are okay to serve as your coach, as long as they hang the banners. Got it. Commitment to excellence baby!!!
Alhambra fans are so delusional, let me ask you this question. What coach would want to come work for you guys if your going to throw him under the bus at first sign of adversity. Support your current coach and shut up. Everyone is such a genius in the stands. If you’re such a good football mind I’m sure your coach would love to have you on staff.
My apologies to Mr. Objective….I didn’t realize Bergstrom was hired to be a father on the Alhambra child-raising team. The losses are all good, so long as the guys get three square meals a day and are in bed by 9:30.
Take notice. I would not be a proponent of running out high school football coaches who are men of character and commitment. If your school is fortunate enough to possess a head football coach who is on staff and is hard working, count your blessings and support him. These are community commodities now-a-days. As a fan, you are entitled to offer critique about game decisions and x’s and go’s, but don’t run out such men who are in essence “raising your kids.” Unless of course they are not men of character.
COLT 45 YOU MUST NOT BLOG AFTER THE 2ND 40 OZ. YOU YOU MAKE NO SENSE
On a scale of 1-10, I would give Alhambra coach Bergstrom a 4. I base this strictly on issues of job performance, not on any personal wishes or whims. I believe that at this juncture, most people concerned with AHS football probably agree with my ranking. So the question becomes: how long should a fellow with this type of success quotient be allowed to stay at the helm? Another relevant question is: should it really take longer than three years to figure-out if a coach is on the road to significant improvement, or is it proper to let a program languish in despair for upwards of a decade, simply because the guys in charge (who don’t suffer personally from the losses) like the head coach?

@my 2 centavos
Why would you think I would be mad when my team wins. The fact is they’ve equaled or exceeded their yearly win total for the last 4 years already. But, who have they played so far? I would be thrilled if they matched 2012 when they won 5 games. Better yet, a winning season, which they haven’t had since 2008. But first year varsity coach Riley has only so much to work with because of…. wait for it….demographics. I have to say I’m really impressed with Qb Bowman. Strong arm! And you’re bragging about being 1 game over .500 on your guesses? Dude, you have really low standards.
We want milvon James as coach
Eric’s got two weeks to fix this if not we will lose to Montebello and maybe it’s time to start thinking about changing some things up.
@Rams Fan, don’t get mad just because TC won again with good coaching and the same demographics as the last few years. But I know it’s eating you up inside to have to admit good coaching does matter. Yes, I picked Marshall but I also picked Warren. For the year, I am still one game above .500.👊
No excuses. Alhambra got “punched in the mouth” after the first quarter.
Bonita-Diamond Ranch: When you can scratch out only 30 yards per quarter of offense when you have the top passer around you are in big trouble. Add to that Diamond Ranch’s running game and this one is in the books. As in most sports gaudy numbers do not always equate to wins. Looking at numbers can give a coach a false identity of his team. To much passing yardage may mean you have no running game. Critics were correct in this outcome. Diamond Ranch way under=rated and the up and down Bearcats look mostly headed down starting league play. Order being restored in the east SGV with DR looking like coach Roddy’s teams of yore. Diamond Ranch will give Charter Oak all they want. Mark my words.
It appears that Santa Fe’s troubles aren’t confined to the loss of those illegal recruits. You don’t lose 54-0 to Downey without understanding that your line play has also vaporized. Ominously, Santa Fe under Pierson is starting to resemble Alhambra under Bergstrom.
Cypress represented what teams aspire to be.Well coached, big all over the field, fast all over the field, athletic all over the field and played clean disciplined football. I have the feeling that these players from Cypress did not all come from the little OC town but one thing for sure, they play in division 9. Unless the Dons have some magic pills where they get bigger, taller, faster and stronger they are in for a world of hurt against teams like Cypress. And there a lots of them.
I’m not so sure about Alhambra being “outcoached again.” The game was scoreless through one quarter, but a big mistake on special teams—on the very first play of the second quarter—killed us.
The long snapper sailed the ball over punter Salman Gurung’s head, and South Pasadena took possession at the Alhambra 13. The Tigers scored just two plays later to take a 7-0 lead.
I don’t think any of our coaches told the center to make a poor snap. Coaching is always an important factor, but the athletes have to properly execute the plays as well.
But, I’ll be the first to point out that we got manhandled at the line of scrimmage from that point on. The Tigers rushed for 156 yards while stuffing Alhambra’s ground game to the tune of -22 yards, and they sacked quarterback Julien Garcia five times.
Garcia’s continued development as a passer was one positive for AHS; he completed 13 of 28 passes for 152 yards despite having to run for his life.
We also have a sophomore receiver named Vito Russell who caught five passes for 75 yards last night. He’s a potential star.
Another conclusion that can be drawn from the loss to South Pasadena is that our line play—on both sides of the ball—and our pass coverage have to improve, or we’ll get rolled by teams like Montebello and Schurr.
If only y’all didn’t lose to a horrible dominguez team..
3 losses this season have come to mediocre public schools.
Where’s the love for Norwalk football? (Former lancer here) we smashed bellflower 35-6.
Billy Moore had 4 touchdowns on the ground.
Cypress is an excellent team. ER beating montbello wasn’t a fluke they just ran into a juggernaut.
@pennies from heaven
Wait. Didn’t you pick Marshall over Rosemead? Ooops. What happened there football genius?
It was actually Rosemead 54 Marshall 6. Marshall lost quite a number of skill guys since week zero, not sure if they are injured or quit. Warren beat St. Paul 29-28. How far has that program fallen? Maybe it’s time to shut down the football program. Girls basketball is all that is left of St. Paul. San Marino will win the RHL. Monrovia may come in third behind South Pas.
Alhambra once again should we can’t compete against the top teams. Out coached again
Rosemead 54 Marshall 0
Charter Oak 37-14
WELL ANOTHER STELLAR PRESEASON FOR JERRY CHOU’S CATS. NOW ON TO LEAGUE WHERE THE PRIMROSE PATH LEADS TO ANOTHER LEAGUE TITLE. THATS WHEN D’OH CAT WILL REAPPEAR FULL OF OBNOXIOUS, DELUSIONAL RANTS THAT PROCLAIM MONROVIA TO BE BACK AND ON THE VERGE OF A CIF TITLE RUN THAT WILL ERASE THAT FOUL TASTE OF A TERRIBLE PRESEASON. EVERY LEAGUE WIN INFLATING THAT EGO WITH FALSE HOPE, THEN THE CRUSHING REALITY OF A ONE AND DONE PLAYOFF APPEARANCE SENDING ALL MONROVIA FANS INTO HIDING NEVER TO MAKE ANOTHER DELUSIONAL RANT UNTIL THE SUMMER. CAN’T WAIT
Spartan Football baby!
Wow Cypress took it to El Rancho and beat them 45-0. I guess last week was a fluke when they the Dons beat Montebello. I was at the game and let me tell you this El Rancho had no business being on the field with Cypress. It was a freshman team playing a Great Varsity team tonight. Cypress had the game in the bag by halftime.
