Gophers Hold off Cougars in Holiday

By Tim Peterson (San Diego)- Rodney Smith scored on a nine-yard run with 2:06 left in the contest to ice a 17-12 win for Minnesota over Washington State in the 39th annual Holiday Bowl before 48,704 at Quallcomm Stadium Tuesday night.

A nine win season, a Holiday Bowl victory, and wins over Notre Dame and Nebraska to finish it off make it a successful campaign for first year head coach Steve Sarkisian and the USC Trojans.

Happy Holiday for Trojans, 45-42

By Tim Peterson (San Diego) -Cody Kessler threw for 321 yards and three touchdowns and Javorius “Buck” Allen ran for 152 yards and a pair of scores to lead USC to a 45-42 win over Nebraska in the Holiday Bowl Saturday night at Qualcomm Stadium.

  It’s tough being a sports fan in Southern California these days. The Lakers and the Clippers finished off disappointing seasons by being bounced in the first round. Both Mike D’Antoni and Vinny Del Negro are in danger of losing their jobs.

While sitting in the press box last Thursday night at Qualcomm Stadium watching the Holiday Bowl, a version of the old Dire Straits song kept popping into my head. “You get your football for nothing, you get your grubb for free. No that ain’t working.”
