Ibis Aguilar is announced as the head coach at Bonita

By Tim Peterson

(La Verne) – Former South El Monte coach Ibis Aguilar has been hired as the new head coach at Bonita pending board approval Aguilar confirmed Wednesday.

Aguilar, who was an assistant last year with the Bearcats, spent four years as the HC at South going 19-24 overall from 2011-2014. The Eagles made the playoffs twice during Aguilar’s run and won a share of the Mission Valley League title in 2013. South El Monte advanced to the second round of the playoffs that year.

Aguilar takes over for Adrian Medrano who left to take the head coaching job at El Rancho in early February.

The Bearcats went 8-3 last year and fell in the first round of the Central Division CIF Playoffs to Don Lugo.

    @fridayknight fraud
You mean the same MVP that was involved in noz tanks and was wearing uhhh how should I put it county jewelry to ensure his where abouts? You clown coming on here bragging! you’ll hear enrollment numbers because that is what matters in football genius! You’d sing a different tune if your were in the shoes of Mt View or SEM enrollment is right above 1,000 kids! Where you guys sit at 2450!!! You coach is good but he ain’t that good level the playing field and he gets torched! El Monte beat them just because of two really good kids and no depth you have the luxury of allowing all your kids to play Frosh to JV then to varsity all the other schools routinely start sophomore and juniors on Fridays get off that high horse there chump your thong is showing big girl!!!

Devin Knight is the most explosive player returning next year. Nuff said!
    24 Martinez from MVHS second
And third would probably be 5 Tovar SEM. But the bottom two are even close to Knight nor are their teams close to the Knights!!! Give us the crown already haters keep hating keep up your excuses wah wah nobody cares if you can’t it done check yourself and what you’re doing but I don’t want to hear whinny piss ants crying about enrollment numbers and things like that you sound pathetic. Win or shut up!!!!

Arroyo name me you 3 Runningbacks? You got 1. That’s it. You need to replace 3 receivers too!!! Not to mention your qb. You guys do have more talent than the teams in league but you choke every year.

  4. April 6, 2016 - 8:22 pm | Permalink

You talk big for not winning a darn thing. Sure you win MVL but nothing after that! We all know your school doubles the enrollment of the other school it competes with. Size is a key factor! So Arroyo should win matter of fact you should be in in entirely different league everybody knows that!!!! So don’t be so braggy kid! Hope Rosemead shuts that up next year

The talent is at SEM? Coming from that has went 6-24 the last 3 years… Lmfao!
Don’t make me laugh. The Runningback will be solid I’ll give you that but after that you guys are what you are! The Talent is always at A-Town. We got 3 Runningbacks 3 WRs Linemen to spare and a punishing Defense that features the reigning MVP.

I stand corrected… If he is a sophomore then we’re in for some good times. Fantastic!
Secondly, An Arroyo coach, Mr Rios said the JV and Frosh teams won league three years running. If that wrong I apologize. Great news!!! Thanks for the update.

Where did you get your info. It is completely inaccurate. Arroyo JV teams have not gonna undefeated the last three seasons. Neither has the Frosh. Secondly, SEM running back last year was only a sophomore. In fact a lot of the players starting last year were sophomores and juniors. The talent is there at south. The only accurate thing you said was coaching staff did get better. I wish my fellow eagles well and I’m excited for this upcoming season.

Your probably right another 3-7 campaign won’t get it done… But we are hoping for better times.

If SEM coach has a losing season this year, which I think he will, he will be released. SEMHS is accepting applications for Head Coach for the 2018 season.

Storming the field vs El Monte was much needed at the time. SEM had very little to celebrate up to that point. So upsetting the Lions manifested into a great celebration that most Eagle fans badly needed.
It has been a while since we’ve had a great athlete to the likes of Cogburns Aguirres Garays Tualas. Although we did have Marcos Lopez Sophomore season which was good but his Junior year fizzled out. I do hear this team is fairly skilled but I think they lost too many seniors last year to replace. Last years RB was nice but again he was a senior. Hopefully Frank Gallardo can lead this group of Eagles and get them flying I do hear the Staff is exponentially better than last year so we’ll see.
Mr. Rios tells me Arroyo Frosh and JV teams have went unbeaten in league the last three years so probably everyone playing for second place anyway. Nevertheless GO EAGLES!!!

Storming the field against El Monte is indicative of where SEM football is right now. When was the last exciting player wearing the wings? I’m sure that has a huge impact on the success on the field. when the next special kid comes around hopefully that would bring change.

Good luck coach Aguilar. As r that whoe district. Great district with really bad leadership. I understand the role of a school board, but this is a prie example of what is Wong in education. Let the individuals that understand and make a living run the schools. They ran a good super out to put a barely literate individual in, hat might have been ready to be an AP at one of the schools. The AD’s at Rosemead, El Monte and SEM are suspect. That was being kind because it s a tough job. The Principal at EMHS has left more then one coach hanging. Look at Sanchez and last baseball coach.
Wish Ibis well. Most HC are not ready until they actually get on the horse, it’s what he does now that he has it. Bub will be gone in a year, Poodley will support.

@southmen, it’s embarrassing that you had to storm the field after beating El Monte! When I was there am upset would be if we didn’t beat them by 40+, but you’re 100% right about it being the AD. It shouldn’t ever have gotten this bad !

  14. April 1, 2016 - 11:14 pm | Permalink

Funny hearing people defending Aguilar on this site. When he was at SEM no one wanted him there. Alumni didn’t support him because he was a Viking stupid as that sounds. He didn’t do a good enough job at SEM his team quit on him. I’m sure he’s better now but SEM is toxic and he fell into it the mess. He was a young coach dealing with problems seasoned vets would have trouble dealing with. Time will tell how good he is but I hope he does well because that will put enormous pressure on the current SEM coach to be better. So with that said good luck mr Aguilar, WIN!!!!

You knew The state of football at South based on getting bounced by Bonita? You wouldn’t know how many kids the Eagles were short that night right? Qb was injured during the second series. That’s a huge reason why the was outta hand. I sat in the stands vs El Monte when South pulled of the upset the fans stormed the field. The state was pretty good that night. You might be right about the laziness though. Nobody wants to put in the work to build. That sad because they actually have talent right now. Few solid athletes and quality big men let’s see what this coach can do with them.

Good to see SEM make an appearance lol
Does this mean you’d rather have ibis Aguilar rather than Frank Gallardo? Or are seriously still begging for Escamilla and Urias to comeback? Or what is it that you’re whining about?

Week zero last season I went to the Bonita-SEM game at SEM high and sat on the home side. That stadium is close to my home. You can tell the state of a football program from sitting in the stands. There were more players than fans in the stands that Friday night for SEM. There was nobody for their home opener. The Bonita side was pretty full. No one was paying attention to the game. I actually felt bad for the players toiling for SEM and the game got lopsided quickly. The spirit had changed dramatically from the last time I was there in 2013. There is way more wrong at SEM than the coaches. It is the general lazy spirit their that reflects poor leadership at the school.

Good point about the standouts. Marcos Lopez was that kid right? I remember that. Definitely time for a change.

Wow… Everything I would want to say! Couldn’t had said it better myself. I’ll take it a step further tho. The stand out football players are under magnifying glass. They step out of line even a bit and they are quickly suspended. Most recently A player who was defending himself was suspended for 6 weeks!!!! It’s a joke at that place. Athletics is gone so far down. Baseball is a joke basketball is so underachieving tennis is a joke track is terrible. My original question is why doesn’t this AD hold herself to the same standard as the football coaches?

  20. March 31, 2016 - 8:18 pm | Permalink

You are the one who knows nothing!!! But I’ll go along.
Funny you should say Escamilla acted normal because actually Escamilla is the only coach that tell Sonia to get lost! The others really tried to work with her but it’s hard to work with someone who doesn’t have a clue on how to run a football team. I will agree that some of these guys were pompous as you call it. But tell have you met a coach who wasn’t a little arrogant? Hmm… One thing I’ve learned is that head coaches are leaders of men filled with A type testosterone so you better be a bigger personality. Aguilar was probably the most laid back of all the SEM coaches he put in insane hours and got released without reason or cause. Just we don’t need you anymore. And to your last point, They acted like they were at a powerhouse? What’s wrong with that? They had their teams believing they could play with anyone… Isn’t that the goal? Just because your small doesn’t mean you can’t compete. The coaches I mentioned in my earlier post did that but apparently that rubs Ayala and the rest of administration the wrong way. Now I ask you what message is administration sending to their kids? Know your role shut your mouth we are small we can’t win!!! Inside you know nothing! Explain the Hernandez hire she made? He Quit on LP the season before… QUIT!!!! And she still hired this guy!!! I’d rather the kids of south hear the coaches message than that of administration. If you ask me the pompous jerks are Mrs Ayala Mrs Avina and especially Mrs Montero.

Most of these comments about Ayala are not based on true knowledge of this individual. And most of these coaches got let go bevause of Admin not the AD. Many of those coaches including Aguilar were pompous, rude and condescending people who thought they were at a powerhouse school. Escamilla was the only one that acted reasonable. If Aguilar didn’t act like the HC of football is a god, then he might have been more successful and had better experiences at South.

  25. March 31, 2016 - 12:46 pm | Permalink

Sonia Ayala would fire Pete Carol! Anyone with any success is deemed the enemy. If football wins then it makes her extreme failures at track and field magnified. If football wins she might actually have to learn how to coach her sport. Last year football went 3-7 and she loves it. When south went on that run to the Semis she was so miserable that she forgot the day her own CIF playoffs were and a kid missed his chance to compete. She’s dropped the ball so many times!

Aguilar will be a competent coach, which is all any program can ask for in these days of increasing demands from parents, players and adminstrators. Much depends upon his ability to retain Bonita’s fine assistants, but as stated below, Bonita and SEM are light years apart in terms of program quality and reputation. Congratulations to this fine individual.

Hey Sonia Ayala, you guys fired this guy for no reason now he’s at a football power house. You will rue the day you let him go.
Let’s count the coaches run off by this so called AD who knows nothing about football. Bill Thompson Erick Escamilla Hector Spathias Ibis Aguilar and probably the best coach in these parts Jerry Urias. How this woman keeps her ability to make football decisions is beyond me.
