Everyone is into the draft! Even my daughter refuses to go to school without her NFL Draft magazine.

“Go melt back into the night…Everything inside is made of stone

There’s nothing in here moving…An’ anyway I’m not alone.”—Bob Dylan

Kick it!

I’m really out of my element when I talk about Catholic school stuff, but why not Salesian, Paraclete, and La Salle in a revamped Del Rey League? (Tee me up and take your swings, I know I’m missing something.)

Good for Kurt Scoby.

While I preferred the NFL Draft when the first two rounds were held on a Saturday afternoon, I still love it. Love reading up on it, planning my day around it, love screaming at the screen when the 49ers take Patrick Willis before the Rams (who got stuck with Adam Carriker) in the 2007 Draft.

Had a good conversation with Jude Oliva, I’ll post it later.

Something that doesn’t occur too often in the Mission Valley League is Rosemead (Steven Nava), South El Monte (Jaime Michel), Gabrielino (Eli Peters), and El Monte (Edward Dominguez) all return starting quarterbacks. Mt. View only threw 36 passes in 2013, so no issue there, but Arroyo comes back without a starting quarterback. When was the last time everyone in the MVL came back with a triggerman, but not Arroyo?

Okay, to be fair, Pasadena Marshall joins the MVL this fall and they don’t have a starting quarterback either.

Our Eyes Are On You Department: Thanks to “AzusaFans” for bringing up WR/CB Dominic Ramirez. The junior-to-be caught 34 passes, returned kick-offs, was in on 26 tackles, and picked off three passes for the Aztecs in 2013.

Howling at The Moon Department: As a Dodger fan, I’m not thrilled with Clayton Kershaw being out for the next few weeks. But fantasy league competitor Andy VillaTheDevil drafted Kershaw so when I heard the news…a smile did come to my face.

Was that wrong? Should I not have done that?

I still haven’t seen Dodger closer Kenley Jansen and former Monrovia linebacker Josh Lowden in the same room together.

So we’re watching MLB Network’s “Quick Pitch” after last night’s show and one of our “single” MVS staffers took notice of host Heidi Watney…And standard MVS rhetoric began: “Not bad”, “She’s pretty good”, “Why would you?”, “That’s not the question…”….yada, yada, yada.

Then a very tasteful picture of Watney is brought up on the computer and an MVS staffer comes closer for a look, with his glasses on, and this statement is made: “Dude, if you have to put your glasses on to check her out then she’s probably too young for you.”

Great rule of thumb for life.

Speaking of age, isn’t 34 a little old for a starting free safety in the NFL? The Washington Redskins signed Ryan Clark, a great player with a lot of mileage, for 3.5 million. I mean, not even Hall of Fame bound Ed Reed can put off father time.

Last Add 2007 NFL Draft: The 49ers took Willis with the 11th overall pick. The Buffalo Bills took Marshawn Lynch with the 12th pick. Then the Rams swallowed the jalapeno and took Carriker at 13 before the New York Jets drafted Darrelle Revis at 14.

…And that is why the team of my youth, the blood of my sporting veins, has not made the playoffs since 2004.

In regards to Cantwell: Talk to me…

In regards to former South Pasadena AD Ralph Punaro’s passing: Good man.

In regards to Ledesma: No, former Azusa quarterback Jose Ledesma and new San Gabriel HC Joe Ledesma are not the same guy.

In regards to “Survivor”: I’m going to go out on a limb and say Tony goes home tonight.

In regards to Kobe Bryant: Stephen A. Smith said this;

“Even though the system is sometimes unjust, unfair, it doesn’t accord us the license to be unfair as well. We have to be sure that if we re shining a light on issues that we’re just as fair-minded as we’re asking other people to be toward us. Because if we’re not willing to do that, then we don’t have a strong argument…So you rise to the occasion by making sure you exercise a level of fairness and justice that you want others to bring your way … we’ve come a long way as a society; we have an obligation to recognize that instead of always getting emotional and assuming that someone is against us because of race.”

The Dude abides…

First off, God Bless Adrian Castro from El Monte, R.I.P. Secondly, I agree with “Right on” it will be a good year to see all the MVL games so good luck to all the MVL QB’s & Teams.
I too am kind of new to this like “just saying” but from some of the posts it is easy to determine who’s from where/who’s supporting which team (just saying = Gabrielino, Anonymous = Rosemead, etc…). Football is right around the corner and exciting times are just a few short months away. “MVL Analyst” nailed the answer perfectly of “Which returning MVL quarterback do you think will have the best season?” I’m not going to beat around the bush on this one. I’m an El Monte Fan but I will in the end give credit where it is due. Regarding Edward Dominguez, his stats are: In just 5 games he threw for 1130 yards, 5 TD’s & 3 two point conversions. He also ran in 1 TD and 1 two point conversion. He was unable to play in the first 5 games last year and by the time he did step in, he was stepping into a losing season with unhappy players. Many of which were quitting the team with each loss. By the end of the season, only I believe 5 Seniors remained on the team and he was throwing to freshman receivers and freshman were filling in on defense. Not to take anything away from Eli Peters because he is a good QB but that happens to be the game he threw for 7/ran for 1. Look for EM to bounce back from last year from day 1 now that their boys are experienced, a year older and a year stronger. Edward Dominguez will be joined by D1 College Prospects Roy Barrajas (RB/WR), Justin Lopez (DL/OL) and as his younger brother Christopher Dominguez (RB/LB) who last year as a Freshman started as JV RB and averaged 100 yards/1 TD per game, they along with the rest of the El Monte Lions will give Eli Peters, Steven Nava and the rest of the MVL a run for the crown.

It doesn`t matter who gab played they did what they were supposed to do, and will do the same this year. Exciting times, football is right around the corner. 1st John 1:7

Sorry guys i`m new to this. As i was saying, El Montei s savvy and lookjng to rebound from last season, South El Monte looking to get back in the mix with their returning running back, Mountain View solid running game and always physical, Arroyo with their solid coaching staff and athletes are always dangerous, Rosemed with a good amount of returnees come back with some experience, and Gab is coming off of 2 decent seasons. It doesn`tatter who they played they did what they were suppposed to do

I believe Gabs defense is due to good coaching. Every year Gab loses big defensive players and Gab seems to be able to put together a pretty solid defense. Example, year before last i believe Gab lost Lorenzo Mena to graduation, and people wondered who could fill his shoes. Well not only did Gab fill it with one player, they filled it with three solid players, Montoya, Villalobos, and Gallagher. I think Gabs D coordinator has enough athletes to fill thks spots. Yes D line looks like it could be solid. As for the O line 3 returners with experience. I`m sure Gab can fill the other spots. Call their O line a joke or whatever you want, i admire athletes who compete at their highest level, even when it seems they may be over matched, and undersized they keep putting out their best effort no matter what. Just like El monte last year! I give it up to every single one of those kids who put forth the effort needed on the football field, and in the classroom. All in all, next season is going to be fun. El monte saavy, and looking to rebound, South El monte

Gabs line a joke. Rosemead has a good line coming back. But I do fear gabs D-line. But if you look at it there defense on max preps all there starters Linebackers are gone. Montoya, Villalobos, Gallagher.

I`m hearing about a couple of other speedy arhletic type of kids who can either fill in on offense or defense for Gab. Gary Hawkins for one, and Gabriel Caranza. Both good size5`11 -6ft- 175lbs and both run the 100 meters at 11.3-11.5 automatic time. Could be a pretty good season for Gab if they can pull it all together. Don`t fall asleep on the Tongva nation!

Peters probably doubled Nava in td passes, and has less picks. Gab ran the pro set for half the season and Peters had a pretty good season with a line that was sub par. I also think Peters had a game where he threw for 7tds and ran one in himself, and he sat most of 3rd quarter and the whole 4th. Don`t be fooled, Gab has some speedy receivers that i think may be better than Mathews
and Franco, as for their running game, i hear that they have the option of using a speed back, or a power back this coming season. O line is definitely bigger we`ll see if that that transfers on to th field

Rosemead has good backs Angel & Patrick, Good receiver in Luis Luna & TE with the best hands in MVL Sahagun who is a monster at LB. South has that shifty RB Lopez. Gabrielino returns 2 receivers Calvin Chen & Satoh both play CB. Chen to fill in Francos shoes & of course Elijah Peters.

There is absolutely no way Salesian would win a championship in the SE. They would make the playoffs if put in a weak league and that’s it.

1st; in order to be a good QB you have talented WR, 2nd; to be great you need a good running game and South has Marcos a Jr, and Rosemead has Patrick #10 a Sr, and Gab?, 3rd; you need to be successful on stats by moving the ball and scoring, and the way to do that is a good OC who understands what the other defenses are trying to do , the only 3 good play callers are Sinsinger at Arroyo, Koffler at retired and Jude at ?wait Jude not in MVL make that 2, Rosemead playcalling is a joke we all know it in MVL. with that said, Arroyo without a returning QB is not a big deal, Coto was not great only OK, his receivers did a great job going after the balls on lousy passing, but Sinsinger ability to playcall and the plays ore good not popwarner!
Hey watch out for defenses Rosemead and Gab have the best defense in my opinion, Arroyo ,South and EM have not stopped offenses at all

From Joe T.: I have no doubt Arroyo will be ready to go with a starter. It’s weird to think that nearly everybody else in the MVL has an experienced passer and Arroyo does not. My mind goes back to 2008 when Austin McFarland was named the starter for the Knights and then broke his arm in the first quarter against Temple City (he should have worn #10) and Steven Rivera came in as a freshman. That year, off the top of my head, Angel Alejandre was behind center for Rosemead and Jose Garay was the quarterback for South El Monte.

I think salesian could make a lot of noise in southeast or mid valley division but that’s brutal that they put them in the PAC 5 to much of a move from d13 to d1 at least put them in southeast were they can have a chance for a title I think if they were to be in mid they could be a champion within 2 years

Which returning MVL quarterback do you think will have the best season?

From Joe T.: Good question, after three years Peters should be ready to break out…A lot of people like Nava…but you might want to keep an eye on Dominguez at El Monte….He has talent and, importantly, there is talent around him.
