Oilers Victorious over Lancers, 41-31

By Rich Whittington

(Montebello) – The Montebello Oilers utilized a solid running attack to defeat the Bell Gardens Lancers, 41-31, Friday evening at Oiler Field.

Montebello (2-4, 1-0 in Almont league play) amassed 401 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns to defeat the Lancers. Junior Running Back Eduardo Gonzalez led the way for the Oilers. Gonzalez rushed for 271 yards, scoring touchdowns of 2, 6, 14, and 24 yards. Adding to the evening’s round totals was Senior QB Richard Placencia, who scored on a 1 yard TD blast. The remainder of the Oilers’ scoring was contributed by Sophomore Kicker Andrew Nava, who successfully added field goals of 22 and 24 yards, as well as converting all five of his PAT attempts.

The Oilers also played well on defense, limiting Bell Gardens to 10 second half points. Derrick Galvez blocked a Lancers’ punt late in the third quarter of play. The Oilers also recovered a Bell Gardens fumble…ending a BG scoring threat.

Bell Gardens (3-3, 0-1) actually scored first, when Senior RB Jesus Sanchez crossed the goal line on a 1 yard TD run. Sanchez added two more scores, running for touchdowns of 14 and 23 yards. Senior QB Agustin Velasquez, Jr. added to the Lancers’ scoring total by tossing a 69 yard TD pass. The remainder of the Lancers’ scoring was provided by Kicker Brandon Ponce, who kicked a 14 yard Field Goal and converted 4 PAT attempts.

Next week finds Montebello traveling to Alhambra to take on the Moors, while Bell Gardens will pay a visit to San Gabriel High School to battle the Matadors. Kickoff time for both games is 7:00PM.

No it’s actually not killing me.The schurr QB is good and competitive.More power to all the young men continuing to play the game we all love.As far as the all star game went,it was a good game competitive on all sides of the ball and our family was grateful our son was just able to get some reps in and get comfortable and back in the saddle for a bit…the body heals a little quicker than psychologically there were definitely some questions about his knee and he wasn’t a 100 percent but he wanted to play again and see how it went.As far as me replying to posts on here and being respectful…I don’t see how that can make my son look bad. What you may know or may not know about my son should be judged by his games played on the field and his work ethic not by what I post here.None of my posts/or opinions here have been tasteless or bashing like yours or others on here.Have a good day and God Bless you.

Why do yo edit my post you (deleted)? You preach all year about ripping into kids then you let these trolls rip into Tapia? You’re a hypocrite just like that other (deleted) Peterson

Mr. Tapia is doing an excellent job defending his adult son and is doing it in a thoughtful respectful manner. Maybe you can learn something from him! Spewing nonsense towards Tim and I isn’t helping your cause either!

How can you let someone rip into Tapia and post it? You’re lucky you get to pic and choose.

Thanks for taking the time out of your day to leave a comment lol..My Son isn’t playing this year he’s rehabbing and concentrating on school. As far as reading the box that reply was for another “hater aka realist” that stated guard would be better suited for position him.
If you actually sat down with my son and broke down film you would know he has no problem with reads in the film room or on the field.
As far as the schurr QB he’s a good little QB I’m not sure if he is starting or sharing reps but I wish him and ELAC football the best.
Thanks for the laughs and have a great day God Bless.

No he doesn’t have to read the box smart guy, the Center or other guard can do that. That responsibility would not be handed to your son, as he can’t make a read lol College football will expose certain talented kids. You can still get a scholarship from playing O line. Isn’t Schurr QB starting now for Elac? Wow and to think you thought your son was better Hahahaha Hahahahahahahah

    @Tapia,

Don’t worry about those trolls. All their doing is hating. I saw your son play for two years and he’s a special player. He’s even a better person. It takes a real zero to sit here and talk crap about a kid that worked so hard and put the time in. He’s going to do big things not just in football but in life.
Tapia has more talent then any of these idiots on here. These guys are just has beens. Your son got a lot of awards and that drives no talent trolls to talk crap. Yes, it’s probably a Schurr guy. They have nothing better to do except be bitter.
Just enjoy your sons career and enjoy watching him play. We all did at MHS and were grateful he played for us….clowns

There was a time when BG would beat Montebello with regularity (not in 87, just saying). But things have sure changed in recent history. Montebello has beat BG a ton lately and broke that God awe full streak. Thank you coach Gonzalez and staff the old timers still hate them!!!!

After all the talk is done and you look back at the game it was an exciting game from what I have read and have been told. Good job by both programs, from what I have been told both programs should be focusing on the defensive side of the ball. Both offenses seem to have done enough in the game to win but when you give up 41 or even 31 points that is not a good thing moving on to the next week. As for “Rings” both Pete and Beltran have won one at other programs that they led but this is a society built on “What Have You Done for me Lately” both high schools should be grateful that both men are leading their football programs!

Pretty sure some coaches on the Schurr staff won rings as players if I’m not miataken. As for Montebello, Coach Pete has a ring as well. Division 3 if I remember correctly… Did your so called cousin from Apple Valley get one last year? How about Santa Maria?

All this talk about young teams is really not that relevant to the success or failure of a high school team. I have noticed after many years of scouting that the best years of superior football players are often their soph and jr. seasons. Many stars fall drastically in their sr. season for a variety of reasons which I won’t address now. Counting on a great season because you have a sr. laden team is highly over-rated.

When Beltran was the hire all we heard was the guru was in and the Almont was going to be ours. This senior heavy year was really our chance but if Monkeybello can do that with a junior laden team. What does the future hold? I think its time for a change and with Schurr struggling with Alhambra it looks like uncle Pete gets another Almont Championship.

You got it wrong, his aunt might be the vice principle. But his dads, auntie from the second cousin married into the family and he lives in Montebello”s area. The adopted sister allows the third cousins step son who is the defensive end to live there during the season then he goes back to the other house. However every other years stays up there unless of course it’s leap year.
