Beltran Says Adios at Azusa

By Tim Peterson

(Azusa) – Robert Beltran has stepped down as the head football coach at Azusa multiple sources confirmed Monday.

Beltran took over for Joe Scherf after the 2015 season and had an overall record of 15-18 in three years. He led the Aztecs to a 6-6 mark in 2016 and into the second round of the CIF Division 13 playoffs. Azusa beat Carnegie in the first round before falling to Santa Ana in the round two.

The Aztecs went 5-6 in 2017 and lost to Rio Hondo Prep 42-22 in the first round. Last season Azusa was 4-6 overall and third place in the Montview League and missed the playoffs.

No specific reason was given at this time for Beltran’s departure.

Azusa will begin the search for a new head coach immediately.

I’m Officially calling for the resignation of Principal Gomez and Superintendent Kaminsky. We need better for our kids. Do the right thing and step aside and allow our kids the chance to succeed.

A copy of this link has been sent to the education leadership at the county and state levels. Various media outlets will be made aware as well.

Coaches have the most impact in football. If you don’t have pitching in softball or baseball you can be Tommy Lasorda and you will not win and conversely if you do have pitching you don’t have to be a good coach and win. That’s what happen to Los Altos softball the last few years they had that D1 pitching now they are average at best.
Basketball is even more athlete driven because only 5 player compete vs 11 in football. Coaches are over rated in baseball, softball, basketball, track and wrestling. Football is how you assess a good coach. I know a lot of coach might think different but those are the facts. If you can win in football, you can take those coaches and they will win in any other sport. Football coaches are by far the smartest coaches on campus.

kenny=well some new and young teacher/coach may need a place like this to start career! Less competition for hire; lot of room for improving program , especially after losing to Workman last year; may take 3 teams to CIF playoffs if deserved, such as Workman in 17 season when league champ Nogales won 10 games. 2 this year bcus Nogales had average record. Win or have success with improving program….beat all but Nogales…and win a playoff game=then resume will improve a lot ==increase possibility to move on. K K=so many school administration are scared of parents and take it out on their own staff. Terrible, especially administrators that have zero experience playing sports and have zero knowledge that ‘so many real life skills are learned/developed on athletic fields!’ Ignorance
has terrible educational effects on their student body.+++SOCAL u r exactly right=the best administrators and leaders of the student body never leave the classrooms or athletic fields! The love and have passion for their profession and almost all head coaches love working the sport they love and the players they coach.

It is a shame that a dedicated coach, such as Beltran, has been attacked personally and professionally with such vile lies. I know for a fact that this is all a result of personal issues that Two Booster moms have with Beltran. The first issue was with them not keeping an accurate balance of money raised for the football team. He insisted on receipts for all purchases made, and they refused to comply. The second issue was the spirit packs that Beltran selected. It seems one of the booster moms insisted Beltran purchase from her son’s company instead of the reliable buisness he has been ordering from for many years. When Beltran declined the offer, the booster mom resorted to attacking his character. Instead of discussing these issues with him directly, both ladies retaliated by spreading rumors. The so called Booster President has resorted to LIES to assert herself in a position of power. Even after her countless lies have been proven to be just that, she resorted to attacking his so called ” UNSAFE COACHING STYLE”. She rallied new parents to further her attack. This baffles me that she would have such a concern, when she has been a part of his program for many years. If she was so worried, why would she allow her own sons to participate in such a dangerous program. Why would she not voice her concern prior to this disagreement? The same goes for her husband, whom Beltran paid out of his own pocket to get finger printed so that he may be on the sidelines with his son during the games. Beltran has been a coach since he was 18 years old, and he understands the importance of having a solid support system for all his players on and off the field. I believe this is why he insisted that his coaches think of themselves as a FAMILY. It is a shame that the administration at AZUSA HIGH SCHOOL AND AUSD has allowed such nonsense to go on. This man has been attacked professionally, and without due process. He was not given the chance to defend himself. He was not given the chance to face those that attempt to tarnish his impeccable record, as an AUSD employee. Instead the administration chose to hold secret meetings, and performed a bias investigation into his football team. Again, I would like to remind those that are reading this, that the administration chose to side with the parents without even allowing Beltran to speak on his own behalf. Beltran resigned, but under duress. How can a coach perform, when he doesn’t have the backing of his school administration? It is a very sad day in Azusa, when one of their own is attacked like this. Beltran has always stood by the motto ” Once an Aztec, Always an Aztec!!!” Unfortunately, his Alma Mater has let him down. Principal Gomez and Asst Principal Velasco should be ashamed of themselves. Not only did they fold under pressure, but they have CRUSHED an entire football program in the process.

I grew up in Azusa and went to school there. There used to be a pride associated with going to Azusa schools. That’s all gone now. We will be pulling our kids out of AUSD. Others should do the same. Too much corruption in the district office starting at the highest level. The gangs are running the schools now, and take up most school resources. The good kids get left behind. Coach Beltran understood this, and was willing to help. District personnel are aware and do nothing. Only care about staying out of the news, and it’s not working. Kids shooting, and stabbing each other on a frequent basis. No confidence in the Azusa school leadership. Board members please do something!

Really, really disappointed to see the spineless admin doing this to Coach Beltran. As previous posters have said they had no evidence to back up the accusations from the self appointed booster parents. The so called President should be ashamed of herself…rallying the other parents the way that she did then trying to claim she had nothing to do with it. Beltran has been there for her family and kids, even loaning her husband money for his “coaching” background check and nominating her for the school’s Parent of the Year award a couple of years ago. The other booster parents need to watch their backs with her, if they don’t like an idea she can turn on them just as quickly as she did to Coach and good luck to the next coach (if anyone dare take the position). It should tell you something when the AD and rest of the coaches have stepped down…they’re not “trying to sabotage the program” they are loyal to a great coach who is being treated unfairly. Can’t wait to see Azusa’s football program go down the drain.

Azusa admin held an “informational parent and player football meeting” yesterday and it was the most pointless thing ever. All they did was sugarcoat the fact that they had no proof of any accusations against Beltran. They constantly dodged questions asking about what happened. They claim to be all about “honesty,” yet they were lying to the parents and players the whole time. Beltran has given his heart and soul to this school and program for so many years. The booster parents are the real dirty ones in this situation, especially the president. Admin believes they will have the “best” season ever and I cannot wait to see the whole program unfold and have a losing season. Kiss goodbye to their winning streak against Gladstone. Azusa high admin and the district sucks and football will now too.

Agreed. Kaminsky was Asst. Sup when Upland had all of their financial troubles. Her consequence for helping to run that district into the ground? A promotion to Superintendent at Azusa Unified! Now of course, financial problems have been a constant issue on her watch. The kids are running wild, student and staff safety is in serious jeopardy from all the gang activity on and around the campuses, School resource officers have been asked to stand down, and good teachers and coaches frustrated with leadership are leaving in droves. They have an emergency situation going on in the Azusa Unified school district. Hope things change quickly for the sake of our kids!

They just use it as a stepping stone to further their own careers. Gomez will leave soon just as Rubalcaba did. Apparently Velasco wants the gig. He’s named the Head Coach on MaxPreps! Azusa unified is run by administrators that never lead people. They just get degrees and have no leadership qualities. The best administrators are ex coaches. That is why the big reason Covina Valley does well is because the Superintendent was a good ex football coach. The best principals are ex football coaches, because they know how to lead people with all different personalities. Darwin takes care of bad run school districts. There is a reason why Azusa is Azusa, Baldwin Park unified is Baldwin Park , Bassett unified is Bassett, and all the other bad run district that are badly ran is no accident. Good ran districts show on and off the field. There is a big correlation with wins on the field and good administration leadership. It all start at the top. Azusa deserves, and all the badly run districts deserves what they get.

I strongly encourage anyone who cares about the city, and schools of AZUSA to email Superintendent Linda Kaminsky. lkaminski@azusa.org The schools are less safe, teachers and staff are less happy, and she caves into the least amount of parent pressure. She had an overwhelming vote of no confidence recently, and they are shutting down schools and programs all the time. All while the pockets at the high levels of the district get fatter. Students are literally killing each other in the streets. New leadership is an absolute must in Azusa! Letting go of Beltran is just another screw up in a long list by Kaminsky and her ilk. Save our schools!!!

This was done by poor admin! Principal Gomez and Asst Principal Velasco are 2 terrible individuals. You have a fine community man/coach in Beltran and caved in to some crappy MOMS. Despite what rumors are going around and what is being said, Coach Beltran did nothing wrong. And if you don’t believe this statement, here is a hard hitting fact. Beltran is still an employee at Azusa High. He has received zero discipline for any accusations that are being brought against him. No suspension, write up, termination…nothing!!! Now every football coach has quit, Athletic Director has submitted her resignation, as well as other coaches in other sports. Good luck Azusa with your terrible facility and super declining enrollment. You got what you wanted and what you asked for!!! And now you wonder why Azusans have been taking their kids to other schools. Not poor coaching, Poor admin who knows nothing. Scherf saw it and Beltran stood by the kids and community. 18 years of coaching there means nothing. And Asst Principal Velasco is his cousin! LMFAO

I heard that Beltran was released due to the fact that Administration didn’t stand behind their staff. There were some accusations made by parents, I cant find that there were any solid evidence, that made wild accusations about Beltran. Administration took the ball and ran with it. Sad to see that 15+ years of loyal service mean nothing in this day and age.

Here is your real reason. A group of terrible administrators hid behind the false accusations from parents in the booster club. Parents were unhappy about some decision that were made by Beltran and they made up stories about him and the program, once they got to this new administration he never had a chance. There was no proof of the accusations and the administration was scared about what the parents would do. They sided with the parents with no proof over the head coach who has been coaching there since he was 18 years old and gave everything he has had to the players at Azusa. He was asked to resign, without having any proof, besides the coward nature of the principal and the assistant principal. What this shows is that the parents are running the show at Azusa High now, with the administration being gutless cowards with no spines to back their coaches. They walk around with a fake attitude of helping our students, when in reality this only scratches the surface of the administrations idiotic decisions on campus. It is a shame that the decision of a few rogue parents will be detrimental to the future success of Azusa High Football. No way you will get anyone cleared to coach by the time spring football rolls around, good luck even getting someone before dead period. The administration has ruined the program, good luck attempting to bring it back. If you are interested in taking this head coaching position, prepare to have eyes in the back of your head, because you will be stabbed in the back either by the parents or the administration. Also, if any parents are looking to move their children to Azusa High, DO NOT DO IT!! In no way, shape, or form will they benefit from being there. An 0-10 season is on the way and I will be laughing from the stands the whole way. A shame for those kids who were putting in so much work during the offseason in the weight room, all for nothing because of cowards at the district office and the administration.

No coach in their right mind should even consider taking that job. The administration is a joke and does not support its coaches or teachers. Their enrollment is way down and all the athletes transfer out. If you have any type of great student or athlete send them somewhere with good administrators!! Scherf saw the writing on the wall that’s why he left.

They only take two teams from that league to the playoffs and Azusa unified is a mess.
