Man, I thought I was going to make it through unscathed Friday night. There were some drizzles early but my thinking was like Bill Murray’s character Carl Spackler in Caddyshack “I don’t think the heavy stuff will come down for quite awhile.”

I’m hearing a lot of good things out of Covina. They have a quarterback and although Joe Benavidez is not the returning starter he’s looked great in the summer. All of the key skill players other than QB Darren Torres are back for the Colts.

Last Throw at Arroyo Before Dead

(El Monte) – Whittier Christian, Northview, and San Gabriel joined Arroyo for one last throw Thursday before the dead period begins for the next few weeks.

You know you’re getting close to the official beginning of the football season when the coaches start telling you they’re done with passing leagues for the summer. Arroyo Coach Jim Singiser told me that last Thursday and West Covina Coach Mike Maggiore told me the week before that.

Bernard Lands at St. Paul

(Santa Fe Springs) – Donald Bernard, long time defensive coordinator  at San Gabriel, has landed as the DC at St. Paul.

The San Gabriel coaching situation has been settled. It went to a name that a lot of people aren’t familiar with. J.D. Thompson, whose roots aren’t embedded in the San Gabriel Valley, has taken the job as head coach.
