The Peterson Principle: 12/18/2016

By Tim Peterson

So apparently the requirement to step down as head coach is your team has to lose in the CIF Finals. Dale Ziola of Los Altos, Mike Moschetti at La Mirada and Burbank’s Richard Broussard all fell in the final game and resigned the next week.

So that must mean Jim Singiser is staying since Arroyo won its CIF Final. With Arroyo taking the Division 12 title in dramatic fashion with the win over Rancho Mirage I’ll still keep my eye out. With sophomore quarterback Ernesto Camacho under center for the next two years the Knights will be fine offensively and, heck, why not try to make it back to back titles? One is great but a repeat would be unprecedented at Arroyo.

If you told me back in August that this would be Singiser’s last year at the helm, I would have tended to agree. I mean, coaches simply burn out and this was his 14th season. But when you have a shot at something special you go for it. I say he’s staying.

**

I got a small wager, I guess it’s a wager, with “anonymous” that he has to admit he’s dead wrong when Anthony White doesn’t take another coaching gig this year. His feeling is that the “Family” thing that White threw out there upon his resignation at Buena Park is all a croc and that White will land on somebody else’s sideline very soon. If he does take a coaching job I have to state publicly that I was “dead” wrong. I’ll confess when I first heard the rumors of White’s departure I thought he was headed to college as an assistant. Maybe a D-1 job at Utah, his alma mater, or another college that would obviously be a promotion in his coaching career. But when White said “I’m not stepping down but stepping up as a father and a husband” I was convinced he wasn’t going anywhere. You don’t make a statement like that if another coaching job is imminent.

I’m sure he will coach again-maybe in a couple of years or so – but for right now he’s taking time off. You can count on it.

Who takes over at Buena Park? The search is on and word is that current OC Jude Oliva is definitely in the mix.

**

tdchristmas1The old Mid-Valley Division is looking good right now. Sierra Canyon (Division 2-A) and Paraclete (Division 3-AA) both former Mid-Valley members, won State championships Saturday night and Arroyo won a CIF title before falling in the State Bowl game a week ago. People used to take shots at the division but it looks pretty good to me.

Nice story at Sierra Canyon with quarterback Niko Harris, out since September with a knee injury, returning to throw for 200 yards and a touchdown to help the Trailblazers beat San Mateo Serra 42-40 and claim the State crown. Oh and of course Bobby Cole ran for 220 yards and four touchdowns.

**

They keep saying (I know, who is they?) but they keep saying Eric MacIntyre is out at El Monte and Eric MacIntyre keeps telling me it’s not true. So as of now Mac is back!

**

South El Monte’s 2016 season keeps looking better every day. The Eagles went 11-2 overall and advanced to the CIF Division 13 semi finals before falling to Rancho Christian. Rancho Christian went on to win the CIF and State Championships. South scored 28 points against Rancho which was the most points scored against it in its post season run. South El Monte’s only other loss was to Arroyo, another CIF champion.

Funny how things change. A year ago SEM HC Frank  Gallardo was a terrible hire and he didn’t know what he was doing according to critics and now his name is being mentioned for other head coaching positions including Los Altos. Oh the life of a high school head football coach.

**

I heard from West Covina head coach Mike Maggiore. No, he didn’t resign but he did tell me that the SGV East/West All-Star game is Friday night January 27 at 7:00 p.m. at West Covina. Montebello’s Pete Gonzalez will coach the West and Eric Martinez of Diamond Ranch will be the head coach of the East. There should be no shortage of talent as there have been a record number of nominations.

**

I’m sure the Rams head coaching search will reach far and wide. Josh McDaniels? Kyle Shanahan? I don’t know…just really doesn’t get the blood pumping. I see Wardell Crutchfield is still available.

**

I really don’t start thinking about basketball until football is officially over. I did get out to a game last Friday night…when does passing league start?

That’s my principle.

SEM over achieved this season. They had a great Oline and a great runner. Anyone who says those numbers aren’t special is insane. On the flip side anyone who tries to sell that SEM will repeat this seasons success is a reach at best. They lose a lot to graduation they might be good but a playoff run might be out of the cards. By your account @South
Who’s returning Oline would you take Arroyos or yours next season? Your returning QB or ours? You see where I’m going here? No need to come on here and bang your chest. The same could be said for us. We’ll probably be bumped up to division 8 or 9

You guys had a good seasons. I will give you that, but next season will be different. You guys had an easy way to the semi. Our offense was off sync. Just wait till next year. Tovar didn’t do anything special. We had a good game plan it couldn’t excuse it. Just wait. I believe in this coaching staff. Relax it is just one season. Let’s see what you do next year

Interesting comments from LionsRoar. Already talking about SEM basketball. The same was said about our football team. One of the last things that was said is that SEM football didn’t compare to the Lions but the scored showed different 19 to 0. Even though Lions had a better team. LOL We will be waiting for you at the SWAMP next year with our returning RB, QB and Offensive Line. It will be a good one. !!!

You sound bitter man, what did Gallardo do to you? Bench your kid or something. His staff seams like him the administration seams to like him more importantly the kids seam to like him. What is your angle here? You’re probably from one of our rival schools with no life and trying to stir the pot. MVS readers the fraud is “Anonymous” Either he’s got a beef with Frank Gallardo or he’s a loser trying to make things up. My Son played for two different head coaches at SEM I can tell you he enjoyed this staff rather than the last. So as I’ve stated Sophomore year=3-7 junior year= 3-7 Senior season =Semi-Finals run!!! Proof is the pudding there! Anonymous is nothing but a troll and that’s it! Frank Gallardo was coach of the year in my opinion.

You ever see the screaming of parents and grandparents at a T-ball game when their little granddaughters team wins? Is that fun or what? The point being, try to denigrate that little girls hit because it is only T-Ball to grandpa and you might just get decked. Amateur sports is not about what division you play it is about the GAME. Even if it’s division minus 100 of the El Monte pee wee ping pong league, YOU TROLL LOSERS.

Hello! SEM O Line were the best in the league, any RB would of put up those type of numbers Tovar put up, and who was the O Line coach? MOONEY! I saw Tovar run straight every time and untouched, no fancy zigzags, those holes were huge! Tovar a good RB but I give the credit to the Senior heavy O Line and MOONEY. Mooney for SEM Head Coach please! Gallardo can coach flag football for Shively or Kranz.

It’s amazing how smart everyone looks when you have one of the states leading rushers on your team. Think about this every team knew exactly who was gonna get the ball SEM had no one else to threaten defenses. Yet he still put up crazy numbers. No kid in the valley was more important to his team than Tovar was. Kids like him can make any coach look smart.

So if gallardo is so smart he should bring in a defensive coordinator to take the defense from him because he is terrible. He cost them those 2 loses. Then I’ll give him credit lol

  27. December 19, 2016 - 4:44 pm | Permalink

So should Gallardo not bring in coaches like Mooney? He deserves credit for bringing him in. You guys are idiots! It’s a staff he’s supposed to bring in the best coaches he can. Gallardo was smart enough to bring in an offensive coach to fix what was a bad offense the year before just like I’m sure he’s smart enough to bring in a defensive guy to help shore that side of the ball for next year. It’s a staff the better the pieces the better the whole will be!

You guys talking about Gallardo and Singiser going to Los Altos. What you guys don’t realize that Los Altos is a terrible pay and benefit district and EMUHSD is not that bad. Those guys would be fools to leave due to terrible pay cuts and benefits cuts. EMUSDH is very good when it comes to that. Jim is at a great spot. If he was to go somewhere might as well go big and go to Los Osos. At least they pay well.

Word is Sonia Ayala hired the baseball coach to run the basketball program with no experience to speak of. Plus they hired two community center coaches as his help and they added the band leader to head up the JV team lmfao. Parents and kids hate the hire. Jordan Ayala Devin Romero will be the best guards in league. They’re a lot better than last year. The team to watch is The view, they have a transfer in running point word is he’s spectacular. They get an offer they can’t refuse or get itchy sooner than later. They are like the retired plow horse looking at the harness with saddness. 43. December 18, 2016 - 4:30 pm | Permalink

The life of a high school football coach is topsy turvey. You’re a bad hire one year the next you’re a guru. So coaches should take full advantage of opportunities while they. can. Frank Gallardo should strike while the iron is hot. He should absolutely Take that Los Altos job if indeed he’s targeted. South El Monte loses a lot in terms of talent next year and has probably hit its ceiling nowhere to go but down now. Plus from what I hear he doesn’t get too much help from admin at SEM anyway.
El Monte’s Coach Mac is here he’s gone he’s back again who knows… I know the lions played hard this season. If he’s gone, go get one of those Arroyo assistant coaches to head your program.
Gabrielino-I think it’s time for a change need a new voice there.
Rosemead-Looked so bad this year. Offense was an utter mess. Hearing whispers of Paramo being let go. Big job opening if he is let go. If he stays he gotta tidy up that O.
Jim Singiser- my bet is he’s walking away on top. It’s been rumored for a couple years now about him walking away… if you’re gonna do it, do it in style coach!

    Basketball starts next week.
    My Early season projections are:
Gabrielino-the machine keeps rolling. Haven’t lost a league game in 5 years. Expect the same this season.
SEM- 2nd place stalwart! New coach to break in but has the talent to make it a smooth transition. Could give a gabby a scare.
Rosemead-Ivan Ip might be the best guard in the league. Wouldn’t be surprised if the beat SEM at all. 2 and three could flip spots.
MtView- hearing good things, fun team to watch. But definitely not in the top 3.
ElMonte-Romero,Ayala and Chavez ready to light it up. Could pull an upset or two but I think the top 3 are just better.
Arroyo-Rebuilding after Losing a very talented class. Will be back next season in a big way.
Marshall-admitting don’t know much about them but I will now that football is over. Could absolutely climb.
